INTERVENTION…

Doug angrily orders them out, but Brooke insists he owes it to himself and to Laurie to listen. Laurie tells him that Ms. English has experience in interventions; Brooke adds that he needs to understand the impact of his actions. Lewis insists he doesn’t need them, but Laurie declares that she does! When he started drinking after her mom died, she thought it made his pain more bearable, but now he’s killing them both! Doug tells Tad to get out of his way and storms to the door, only to find David Hayward about to knock. He tells the doc to get out of his way, but David blocks the door as he asks the others if they’re all here to help Laurie? Tad agrees this is an intervention; as David doesn’t have anything to do with it, why doesn’t he take off? David notes that interventions are usually run by family and friends, “You guys don’t qualify as either.” Doug wants them all out, but David says he’s been subjected to this guy drunk on numerous occasions; he’s patched him up, and seen what he does to Laurie. He tells Doug he’s a disgrace as a father and as a man; he humiliates himself and his daughter, and is too soused to even realize it! He rages that Doug doesn’t deserve a daughter like Laurie, and if he doesn’t pull his act together, he’s going to make sure he loses her for good! Doug counters that he’s a criminal, and nobody’s going to turn his daughter over to him! David lunges at him when Doug says he’s some kind of a pervert, but Tad holds him back as he says Lewis doesn’t know what he’s saying. Brooke points out this is not the way to conduct an intervention, and Tad tells Doug the point the doctor is trying to make, in his own way, is that his selfishness is causing his daughter a lot of pain. Doug insists he loves his daughter, but David asks how he loves her? He shows that love by embarrassing her in front of her friends, scaring and humiliating her! Every child is a precious gift, and he doesn’t deserve his! Doug angrily asks what he knows about being a father? He doesn’t see him with any kids! David quietly says he has a daughter, but she’s dead—she was taken away from him, so whenever he sees someone like him taking that miracle for granted, it makes him sick! Tad thinks he should lighten up, but David wants to try a little experiment. He picks up the liquor bottle and holds it under Doug’s nose as he asks how much he would give for a shot of this? He loves it even more than his own daughter! Lewis insists he doesn’t love anything more than his daughter, and David asks why he chooses it over her every single day? Why was it more important to him than being there for his own daughter’s graduation? Laurie tearfully says he changes when he drinks; he gets angry and mean, and he hits her! Doug protests that he would never hurt her; Laurie says he drinks so much that he doesn’t remember, but she does! He hurts himself and her every day, and she wonders why he wants to die? Doug doesn’t, it’s just that when her mother passed away… Laurie wants him to stop using her mom as an excuse! He’s the one that opens the bottles and drinks, but she’s the one that feels like Hell afterward, and she’s not going to do it any more! She’s not going to sit around here and watch him kill himself! Doug takes the bottle from David and looks at it for a long moment before pouring it down the sink. He goes to Laurie and says he’s sorry; he loves her and promises never to do it again. Laurie holds him in her arms as he cries and begs her not to leave him.

Brooke tells David this is not what she would have scripted, but thanks him for his help in getting through to Laurie’s father. David says he understands him; he knows what it’s like to want to bury your pain. As Brooke says she’s so sorry about Leora, Laurie comes out of the bedroom and tells them her dad called the treatment center. Brooke thinks that’s wonderful and Laurie asks to talk to Jamie for a second.
