Maria asks Edmund what it is this time, the mob, drugs or gangs? She turns to Anita, "It's all about the big killer copy!" Edmund says it's about his condition; Brooke found some interesting articles for him to look at. "That was helpful, Brooke," Maria notes unenthusiastically as she looks through one of them. Edmund tells her the data is crucial for him to make an informed decision, and he's decided to explore the possibility of surgery, "I hope you're with me on it."
Alone with Anita, Edmund notes that her sister's riled, and when she's riled He didn't want it to happen this way, and just needed more time to study the research and know exactly what he wanted to say; he figures he has one shot with Maria to make his case.
In the hallway, Maria angrily tells Brooke she has no idea what she's doing! Brooke knows Edmund wants all of the information he can get about the successes and possible risks, and she thinks that together they can help him with that. Maria tells her they can talk about her writing a story about Edmund's medical condition if she wants, but there's no way she's going to give her opinions and be involved in this decision! Brooke asks what she wants her to do, just tell Edmund to forget it and tell him no? Maria snipes that she never could do that, and asks Brooke if they can just drop this latest "get close to Edmund" ploy? Stung, Brooke says she knows she's under a lot of stress right now, so she's going to let that slide. She knows how much she loves Edmund, but thinks he needs all the information he can get. Maria orders her not to presume to tell her what her husband needs! She clarifies-Brooke is to forget the research and the favors, "Don't come near my husband again! Do you understand me?" Brooke understands how she feels, that she and Edmund have barely gotten their lives started again, but Maria snaps that would have been a lot sooner, too, but does she really want to get into that right now? She just wants her to back off! Brooke wants to know how what Edmund wants figures into all of this? They both know he can't be talked out of taking a risk if he thinks it's going to pay off! It's in his blood, and if she can give him information that will help in making a decision, she feels she owes him that. This is about Edmund, who has some tough choices to make, and he's going to make them whether she hands him the statistics or not! Maria coldly says she obviously did not get what she said earlier, so she's going to remedy that; she asks Security to escort this woman off the premises and put her on the "Do Not Admit" list for this floor, "Because I do not want to see her back here-ever!"
Joe comes up and asks Maria if that was Brooke being led away by Security? Maria says it was a misunderstanding, and is all taken care of now, but Joe tells her she's got to give him more than that-this is his hospital, and Brooke's family. Maria insists it's under control, but Joe doesn't think it's under control at all. He suggests she would be a lot more useful to everyone, including Edmund, if she'd take the time to recharge. She can't make Edmund well by wishing or worrying, and it's not in her hands. "The hell it's not!" she exclaims. Joe sees they have a misunderstanding, "I don't want to shut you down, but if you force me, I will."
Anita tells Edmund she's worked with all sorts of doctors since becoming a physician's assistant, and Maria is still the best-she'd trust her with her life, and Maria thinks the surgery is a bad plan. Edmund thinks that's fear on her part, but Anita states the obvious-she doesn't want to lose him! Edmund agrees he doesn't want to be lost, but he wants to walk! He says Anita speaks the secret language of the Santos'-can't she just make her see this as a chance, not a death wish? Anita can't ask Maria to ignore her feelings; it's her life, too, and she has to follow her heart. Edmund agrees this is between him and Maria, and he shouldn't put her in the middle. Anita wonders what's the real issue here? Does he want Maria to back up the research, or his decision to have the surgery? Has he made up his mind yet? Edmund changes the subject to Isabella's cooking, and smiles that it's good to have her home. He asks how long she's staying, and Anita says that's up to Edmund and Maria. When he asks about work, she shrugs that she's on family leave, and gives the same answer when he asks about Bobby. She adds that Bobby knows how to entertain himself, and can get along without her. Edmund notes that he speaks a little of the Santos' secret language, "Is everything all right with you and Bobby?"
