Character Background:

Maria Santos came to work at Pine Valley Hospital as the newest neurosurgeon in town in 1993,   Although Edmund Grey was still in love with Brooke English, Maria became involved and fell in love with him herself. The triangle was finally broken when Maria married Edmund and they were extremely happy.

Del Henry came to Pine Valley and it was revealed that Maria had had a affair with Del during their college days together. The affair resulted in Maria becoming pregnant with his child, unfortunately, a miscarriage resulted and along with that an infection that caused Maria to have fertility problems. They wanted a child desperately and after several attempts with "in vitro" they finally decided to adopt a child.

Maria's sister, Anita, introduced them to her pregnant unmarried friend, Kelsey Jefferson. Kelsey lived with them after she had agreed to let Maria and Edmund adopt her baby. Kelsey, before the adoption trial period was up, decided she wanted the baby back, driving a wedge between Maria and Edmund that caused them to separate.

Maria, devastated by the loss of Sami, was comforted by Dimitri Marick, Edmund's half brother who was then married to Erica Kane. Dimitri, estranged from Erica reached out to help Maria and both feeling needy, ultimately slept together, but just once. Maria and Edmund reconciled and were happy once again when Bobby Warner convinced Kelsey that Sami belonged with Maria and Edmund and Kelsey gave them Sami to keep as theirs.

The Greys were very happy until Maria discovers that she is pregnant, but who is the father? The guys agreed to a paternity test and Skye Chandler (who had a "thing" for Edmund) changed the paternity results to indicate the baby was Dimitri's, hoping that Edmund would be free to be with her which never happened. Believing that Dimitri was the father of Maria's baby, Erica confronted Maria in an ice storm at the cabin in Willow Lake. Maria went into premature labor and Erica delivered the baby. The baby needed medical attention so Erica left Maria and while driving Erica's car went into the lake and the baby was lost. Ester Glynn, who lived in a nearby trailer park, had found the baby and Erica convinced her that the baby was really Erica's. Erica was ready to Maria the baby when she overheard some loveless remarks and decided to keep the child herself, claiming a Russian adoption and named the baby Sonya.  Eventually, Erica was found out and she finally gave the baby back to Maria and was charged with kidnapping.

During a flight back from New York, Maria had switched seats with Brooke so that Edmund and Brooke could work on Tempo business. The plane crashed and the seat in which Brooke was to have sat was the seat that toppled off the cliff and exploded, along with Maria...maybe.
