NOT A PROBLEM?

Kendall speaks on the phone to Casey, reassuring her that she's on top of everything and that getting the quarterly reports won't be a problem! She hangs up and calls for Nikki to get in here, then mutters, "Not a problem? Yeah, like hell!" She's relieved when Nikki brings the reports in to her, but groans upon learning of a call from Legend Magazine on Line 2. She takes a deep breath and speaks to Roberta from Legend, breezily saying she's sure Roberta is just as excited as they are! Her face falls when she learns that the samples never got there, and she quickly apologizes, saying she knows about the deadline. She explains that Greenlee's not here anymore, and she's taken over for her - temporarily; she promises the materials will be on Roberta's desk within the hour. When Nikki comes back into the office, Kendall glares at her as she says the samples didn't make it over to Legends Magazine, and this is Greenlee's baby; she worked her butt off for this deal! She instructs Nikki to get a whole new batch of samples over to them, and no excuses! As Nikki is about to leave, Kendall tells her there's one more thing, "Just whatever you do, make sure Casey does not know we're in trouble, because if she finds out, she's going to throw us…" Nikki belatedly indicates that Kendall should look behind her; Ms. Hart does, to find Casey Wexler standing there. When she repeats, "The deal with Legend Magazine is in trouble?", Kendall insists it was just a small mix-up; she was just exaggerating to make a point. With a quick motion of her head, she sends Nikki away. Casey tells her she's trying so hard to take Greenlee's place, and it's not working, "You're not Greenlee and you never will be."

Kendall gives Casey the quarterly reports, and Ms. Wexler asks if she's spoken to Greenlee? Kendall tells her they speak almost every day, and she's had a rough time. Casey says she told her to take all the time she needs, and Kendall notes that not many executives would be that understanding. Casey tells her that Greenlee is a valuable asset here at Chivana Cosmetics, more valuable than she realized. (Note to all: I'm not sure of the name Casey mentioned - I listened several times, but couldn't quite get it, so did the best I could. The one thing I am sure of is that it wasn't Revlon! What did we miss?!?) Aidan comes to the door as Casey goes on that Greenlee worked for months to get the New Year's issue of Legend Magazine, "Thanks to her, they went with us instead of Enchantment; now we don't want them to regret that." He listens as Kendall insists they won't, and that everything is under control. Nikki hurries in carrying a large box, and announces the samples never got to the magazine; they were down in the lobby. Thinking quickly, Kendall tells Casey that's why she fired their courier service, and hired this man's company! She brings Aidan into the office and says he has excellent references from his previous employers, and will not let them down. Turning to Aidan, she asks, "Will you?" Aidan agrees he's the brand new courier, and Kendall adds that she stole him away from Enchantment. Casey likes that, and welcomes him aboard. Kendall assures her there's nothing to worry about with this problem; she'll take care of everything. Agreeing that Kendall should be the one doing all the worrying, Ms. Wexler leaves. Kendall gets rid of Nikki with another motion of her head, and thanks Aidan so much for not busting her! Devane laughs that he figured it wouldn't go over so well if she knew he was only her lunch date. Kendall repeats that she so owes him - she'll give him anything he wants! Aidan grins as he suggests she pay for lunch; Ms. Hart agrees, but says it will have to be another time - she can't leave here now. "Not until you've got Greenlee's job firmly in your pocket, right?" he wonders. Kendall asks why everybody thinks she wants Greenlee's job? "Because you're Kendall?" Aidan suggests. Kendall tells him that actually Greenlee's job is the last thing she wants, "I can't even do my own, which is why I need you to help me." She hands him the box and says it needs to be there in 45 minutes or less, and Aidan realizes she really does want him to be her delivery guy! She pleads with him to do it, saying it's just for today, and he has no idea how much is riding on it! Devane tells her this lunch she's paying for better be followed by one huge dessert! Kendall gladly agrees, and asks, "So you'll do it?"

LOOK AT YOU!

Trey bangs on the door and calls to Greenlee that he knows she's in there. She comes out from the bedroom and shouts for him to go away, but Trey tells her to open the door or he'll go on pounding all day. Greenlee rolls her eyes and reluctantly opens the door. "Look at you!" Trey exclaims as he takes in her disheveled appearance. "Why are you here?" Greenlee demands, "I already kicked you out once today!" Trey tells her that was yesterday, and realizes she's been in bed for two days. "Why should I ever get out of bed again?" she asks. Trey asks why she doesn't go to work, "You still have your job, don't you?" Greenlee points out that she doesn't have to work, "I'm back to being a rich heiress; my grandfather's throwing money at me!" Trey thinks it's still time to pull herself together. He begins, "Look at you! If Leo could see you right now…" Greenlee snaps, "Leo can't! You jerk - how dare you?" Trey persists, asking how long this is going to go on? "Maybe forever," Greenlee tells him, "I'll wallow in all the misery I want to!" Trey gently asks if she really thinks this is what Leo would want, but she feels this is all she can do. Trey argues that if Leo is in Heaven, he's having way too good a time to be impressed with this, "But, if as I suspect, that's all a crock, then the only place that Leo exists right now is right here." He points to her heart and says she has to go on for him, and keep being the person he loved. Greenlee ignores him and sinks down in a chair. Trey concludes, "Or, maybe I'm all wrong and he's really getting off on your puffy eyes and ratty robe." As he moves to leave, Greenlee calls out, "Trey, wait!" He turns to face her as she plaintively asks, "What do I do?"

YOU COULDN'T IF YOU WANTED TO!

Kendall tells Nikki to send a fax, and stand there to make sure every page goes through - she doesn't want to have anything else go wrong today! Greenlee comes to the door, and gives Nikki that same head motion to get rid of her! Kendall takes a call, and says that Greenlee's not here anymore; she's in charge, and does have the authority to order that! She sees Greenlee, who notes the obvious - Kendall wasn't expecting her. Ms. Hart agrees, but says she's having a hell of a time, "Thank god you're here!" Greens laughs as she asks if she's supposed to believe Kendall's thrilled about that. When Kendall says they've missed her, Greenlee retorts that she's in mourning, she's not stupid, and Kendall's taken over! Ms. Hart reminds her that her job has a lot of duties attached to it, and if she's not here, someone has to do them. "Yes," Greenlee agrees, "But not with so much relish! I've lost everything else - why not my job, too?" Kendall insists she's got it all wrong, but Greenlee tells her she's got no morals and no scruples, "And there you are behind my desk, pretending to be me." She says she's got it, because she's been there; when she worked for Erica, she tried to undermine her, "But she saw through me, and I see through you." Casey comes into the office, and hugs her as she says this is a surprise! When she asks if Greenlee is ready to come back to work, Greens asks if that would upset her plan if she said yes? Casey doesn't understand, and Kendall tells her everything's okay; she was just bringing Greenlee up to speed. Greens says she knows all she needs to, and tells Casey, "She's really stepping up to the plate, isn't she?" Casey tries to be reassuring, and says Kendall's working out very nicely; Greenlee should take all the personal time she needs. Greenlee smiles mirthlessly as she says she guesses it's true that there's a bright side to everything, "At least one person is profiting from Leo's death." She walks listlessly to the desk as Kendall insists they need her around here, and she can't wait for her to come back! Concerned, Casey asks if she's all right, or needs a glass of water? Greenlee says she's fine, "What I need is a little loyalty, but I guess that's too much to ask." Casey doesn't understand, and Kendall explains that Greenlee thinks she's trying to steal her job, but nothing could be further from the truth. Casey tells Greenlee she couldn't even if she wanted to! Kendall admits she's been messing up, and Casey almost fired her this morning. Ms. Wexler agrees the only reason she didn't is that she's expecting her back as soon as she's up to it. Greenlee shouts at them to stop it - she's so sick of everyone's phony kindness and sympathy! Kendall insists it's true, and brings up the deal she made with Legend Magazine; she almost tanked it! "My deal with Legend Magazine?" Greenlee repeats. Kendall says yeah, she trusted other people to do her job, and should have followed through the way she always does; luckily, she pulled it off at the last minute! Greenlee angrily says she sweated over that project for six month! The publishers wanted her to jump through hoops, and she did it. She convinced them to go with them instead of Enchantment, and getting the better of Erica's empire is an achievement! Casey says it didn't go unnoticed at corporate headquarters - she was the darling of the Boardroom! Greenlee shakes her head and asks what it was all for? She recalls all those long hours behind this desk, working on her laptop, stressing out over this when she should have been with Leo! She thinks of the many times she told him she had to work, and recalls that one night he wanted to go to a triple feature at the drive-in, and offered all the buttered popcorn she could eat, but she was too busy. Her tears fall as she says she was stupid, and now she'll never be able to go to a drive-in with him, ever. She says she can't be here, and if Kendall wants this job, she should take it, "It's yours!" Kendall insists that's not what she wants, and Casey adds that she's a valuable of this corporate family. Greenlee cries that she doesn't want to be a member of this family; she wants her own family, and can't have it now. She hurries from the office, and Kendall pleads with Casey not to listen to her, saying she's very upset and emotional, and not making any sense; that was her grief talking, not her. Casey notes that it's heartbreaking, but she's got a business to run and it doesn't look like Greenlee's going to be back any time soon. She asks if Kendall can really do this job, and Ms. Hart says yes. Casey has her doubts, but they don't have much choice now, so they'll give it a try. She knows Kendall's not angling for Greenlee's job, but warns if she screws up like she did this morning, she won't have the job for long. She leaves, and Kendall takes several deep breaths as she decides what to do next. She's pleased when Aidan comes back, and asks if he delivered the package already? She says he works fast, and Aidan notes that she does too, "Apparently while I was away, you snatched the job you didn't want!"

Greenlee goes home and absently glances through some bills. She comes across some restaurant guides and sadly says, "New York City." She looks at a framed picture of herself with Leo, and sinks down on a chair as she whispers, "Leo, I miss you so much." Her mind takes her back to their wonderful day in the park - balloons and kisses, walking barefoot through the grass, bike riding, feeding the ducks, picnicking and laughing, holding hands with the man she loved, and their romantic carriage ride. Unchecked tears course down her cheeks as she thinks of all she's lost.

Kendall insists she doesn't care what he believes, but she didn't try to steal Greenlee's job; she actually bent over backwards to help her try to save it! Aidan knows; he heard how she broke down, and how Kendall smoothed things over with the boss. Kendall says Greenlee belongs here, and Aidan guesses it's a habit of hers, saving other people's jobs! He points out that he did thank her for saving his, and Kendall smiles as she agrees he did. She says she feels so bad for Greenlee, and Aidan agrees she must be hurting bad. Kendall says she doesn't even know what she was doing here - she just lost the love of her life! "Like you did," Devane points out, and Kendall says she got over it; is that what he meant? Aidan mildly says he doesn't know how or if she's gotten over Ryan, but he trusts she will someday. Kendall wants him to know that what happened had nothing to do with Ryan. Aidan understands, and agrees it wouldn't be the first time if he didn't. Ms. Hart tells him she's got to get back to work; she just told Casey she could handle Greenlee's job, "And no one believes that, including me." Trey comes in and hears her remark. "You're doing what?" he asks, "Was Greenlee here?" Kendall says yes, and she went home. Trey asks his sister if that was before or after she stole her job? "My god, Kendall, how could you?" he demands, "You knew she was falling apart and you stole her job!" Aidan suggests he give her a chance to explain, but Kendall snaps that she doesn't have to explain herself to a deceitful criminal like him! Trey tells her they're not through, and he leaves. Aidan asks Kendall why she didn't tell him the truth, that Greenlee gave up her job. Kendall insists she doesn't owe anyone an explanation; anyone who doesn't like it can go to hell, "Including you!" When he asks what he did, Kendall says nothing this time, but he's just like everyone else - always ready to think the worst of her. Aidan happens to think what she did here today cancels out about 40% of all the crummy things she's ever done. Kendall laughs as she says he's trying to soften her up so he can knock on her door at night. Aidan says she's messing up now; he's saying nice things to her for real because he likes her - why can't she just say thanks and accept that? "Because the last person who was nice to me didn't stick around for very long," she admits. Aidan says he's not Ryan, and Kendall agrees he's not better and he's not smarter. Devane agrees with that, but he is here. He thought she was very kind and generous today with Greenlee, "And for what it's worth, I liked you for it."

Greenlee comes out of the bedroom to find her mother in the living room. She asks how she got in here, and Mary explains there was something wrong with the lock, and she was concerned. Greenlee says that Donald Steele jimmied the lock, and her mother is horrified that that parasite broke in here! Greenlee says she held him off at gunpoint, "So, you see, it's not too wise to come in here uninvited." Mary doesn't think her daughter looks well at all, and begs Greenlee to talk to her. Greens tells her she went into work today, but found out that Kendall stole her job, "The thing is, I don't care." She says it doesn't matter anymore; nothing matters. Mary takes her in her arms as Greenlee cries that she can't do this; Trey told her she had to live her life and be the person Leo loved, but she can't do this. Mary insists that she can, and she'll help her! Greenlee asks how? She cries that all she ever thinks about is Leo, what they had and what they could have had together. Mary thinks when they lose someone they love, they have to find a way to distract their minds. She suggests travel, saying that's always fun! She asks if Greenlee's ever been to Buenos Aires? They could bring back shoes and purses and diamonds… "Diamonds?" Greenlee asks, "That's why Leo died, for Vanessa's diamonds!" She cries that she can't do this, and rushes from the room.

Trey knocks on the door and asks Mary if Greenlee is here? Mary tells him she was, but she left. She doesn't know where she went; she just packed a bag and left. Trey asks what happened, and Mary says it was her fault; she packed a suitcase, and walked past her without a word. She asks if Trey has any idea of where she may have gone, and Trey tells her, I think I know."

THE SHORT ANSWER…

Tad finds Maur-ia on the beach, looking out into the crashing surf. He apologizes for startling her, and says he just had to come. When she asks what he's looking for, Tad tells her it's funny - he asked himself the same question when he was getting in the car. He's neglecting his work and his family's falling apart at the seams, yet here he is. Maur-ia asks why, and he tells her, "Short answer? As bad as my life is, I'll feel better if Hayward's is worse." He goes on that David took five years of her life, and cost him what was most important in his. Maur-ia says that's why he's here, revenge, and Tad asks, "Not a good enough reason? I'm sorry, but it's the only one I've got." He asks why she is here, looking cold and tired, and Maur-ia explains that she hoped this place would help her remember something. It hasn't, but now she can't give up, because it's more important than ever. Tad questions why that is, and she tells him she's more alone now; she relied on David to ground her in reality. Martin suppresses a smile as he notes, "Bad choice." He says he's been tracking every move Hayward made around the time the plane went down. He knows David found her here, and now they tell him he did it while he was burying some poor slob right there, "I'd give a lot to know who he was trying to hide." Maur-ia says the police took the remains, and Tad should ask them. He shakes his head as he says that Forensics and the police won't have any answers for a while; he was hoping she would. Maur-ia doesn't know who he was, or even if she knew him. Tad's sorry, and tells her he knows how that is. Maur-ia rubs her neck as she replies that she doesn't know how he would know how that is. He explains that twelve years ago, he got hurt pretty badly, and the same thing happened to him; the only thing he remembers is that he hated it. Maur-ia points out that he got his memory back, and Tad says she may, too. Maur-ia insists she can't just wait around for that to happen, and needs to get some answers for herself. Tad suggests that he may be able to help her, but she suspiciously asks why? He told her, it's because wherever and whatever her answers are, they have a lot to do with David Hayward. "Okay, so you're going to help me to get David?" she asks. Tad nods as he asks, "Sounds better than revenge, doesn't it?" He admits he's curious about something, "When he told you that you had killed somebody, why did you believe him?" Maur-ia says he had been good to her, and she had no reason to think he was lying; why would she? Tad agrees most normal people wouldn't, but most normal people wouldn't hide a body on a public beach. He asks if she thinks Hayward was trying to set her up with this, and Maur-ia says she was already convinced she was guilty of this; that's why she was scared to death when he and Brooke came to Nevada. Tad tells her, "By the way, that woman you set me up with, the one that looked like you - very clever!" Maur-ia thanks him, saying you have to be clever when you're on the run. Tad wishes aloud that he had found her before Edmund and Brooke got married; a lot of people could have been spared a lot of pain. He asks if she's ready to make sure David doesn't get away with it this time? She looks at the hand he offers, and shakes to seal the deal. With a final look at the marked crime scene, Tad and Maur-ia leave the beach.

COMPLETELY INNOCENT?

Anna looks in through the window of her office, the nameplate still on the desk, and David asks what she's thinking? She tells him she wished they'd get through with him so they could get the hell out of here, and David promises she will win in the end. He says it's so easy for them to accuse him of every ridiculous crime under the sun, but they're going to show them, "We're going to prove to them that this time I am completely innocent." Anna laughs shortly as she says they both know that's not true. David paces and tells Anna they're in there right now trying to cook up homicide charges against him, without the slightest bit of evidence. "I know," Anna retorts, "All this for one little five-year old cadaver!" David insists it was a cadaver when he buried it, and the tests are going to prove soon enough that he did not kill that man. Anna thinks the D.A. and the police have every right to ask him why he was burying a dead body on a public beach; that same question has been crossing her mind a lot. David insists he's happy to tell her anything she wants to know, but she tells him, "No, don't!" She reminds him that she's not his wife anymore, and can be forced to testify. David asks if she would, and Anna fires back, "Would you rather me be thrown in jail for contempt if I don't?" David assures her he wouldn't, and agrees not to tell her anything, "But just know in your heart that I did not kill anyone!" He's pleased when Anna tells him that she actually does believe that; she supposes in his own way he was trying to help Maria, and that's all she needs to know. She tells David, "For the sake of our child, no matter how much I beg, don't tell me anything more."

A young man asks an officer for Chief Devane, and the cop snarls, "You mean ex-Chief Devane!" He gestures and tells the guy, "Over there, with Dr. Death!" He goes over and introduces himself as Kenny Adler, and Anna tells David this is the attorney she hired to represent him. David shakes his hand and asks, "And how many weeks have you been out of law school, Kenny?" Adler tells him two whole years, and Anna points out that he should be grateful; Mr. Adler comes very highly recommended. "By whom?" David wonders, "His kindergarten teacher?" Adler laughs and says they can stand around and talk about his baby face, or they can figure out a way to get him out of this mess, "Either way, I'm on the clock." David seems to like his attitude, and tells Anna all right, he can work with him. Anna leaves them to talk, telling Adler she's not covered by privilege. David turns to the attorney and asks, "So tell me, Junior, what strategy are you going to use to get me off?" Adler says that depends, "What do they have against you?" David tells him nothing much, it's just a cadaver that's been rotting on the beach for the past five years; the guy happens to be a former patient. Adler thinks that's a lot, adding that Forensics could make that cadaver sing like Pavarotti, "If so, what would he sing about, Dr. Hayward?" Jack joins Anna, who is watching from a distance. He asks if she's here in an official capacity, and Anna says no, "What can you tell me?" Jack says he can tell her what the Medical Examiner found out; he's got the report right here.

Tad and Maur-ia come into the station and ask what's going on? Jack says he's got the results of the autopsy; it says the deceased died of cardiac failure, and had been dead at least six months before the body was buried on the beach. "Six months!" Tad exclaims, "Where'd you stash him, a meat locker?" David smiles broadly as Jack goes on that apparently the man had donated his body for medical research, and his remains were frozen prior to dissection. Anna looks with relief at David, but Tad objects, "Wait just a minute! If that's the case, then why the hell would you go to all the trouble of burying him in secret?" David sarcastically says of course he's going to answer all his questions, because this matter really concerns him! Kenny Adler asks who he is, and David says no one! Adler says he'll deal with the D.A.; he'd like a copy of the autopsy report, and is demanding that Jack release his client immediately! He says his client is a world-renowned physician who just this week saved a prominent citizen's life; they both know Jack can't keep him here because he disposed of medical waste improperly! "Aren't you a sensitive type of guy?" Tad notes. Jack tells Adler they can keep him here, but choose not to. Adler thanks him, and asks who's going to process his client's release? Jack nods at the cop, who roughly grabs David. Adler tells him to watch it, because he's one shove away from a police brutality report! David smiles faintly at Maur-ia, and Tad asks Jack what the hell is going on here, "Don't you ever get tired of watching him laugh in your face?" Anna watches as Tad pulls Jack aside. Tad tells Jack he can't let Hayward go; he's got to charge him with something! Jackson insists he doesn't have anything that will stick, but Tad wants him off the street for a while. Jack argues that there's no point in putting him in jail if he'll be out in a day and a half, but Tad disagrees. He insists a day and a half is all he needs to find out why David buried that guy on the beach. Jack wonders what makes Tad think he'll find out something the D.A.'s office couldn't, and Tad says Jack's the D.A. - he's not allowed to break the law. "Neither are you, Tad," Jack notes, "But what do you have in mind?" Tad says he was at the hospital when he and Jake went through the records, and learned that David used the same drug on Maria as he did on Dixie. Jack agrees to give him a day and a half, and wishes him luck. Tad goes to Maur-ia and tells her they have 36 hours to make sure Hayward pays for everything he's ever done!

David asks if he can go home, and Adler says he's a free man. David hugs Anna and tells her, "Come on, darling, let's get out of here." Jack stops them as they're about to leave, and tells David they have some unfinished business here. Adler protests, but Jack tells him there are new and current charges against him, including criminal mischief. Anna says this is harassment, pure and simple, but Jack tells her he works with what he's got. Adler says this is a waste of the court's time, and his client will be out tomorrow morning. Jack says that for whatever time, he'll be in a jail cell, and maybe he'll use the time for personal reflection! He instructs the sergeant to show Dr. Hayward to the cell he knows so well. Maur-ia asks Tad what they're going to do, and he tells her they know Hayward used the same drug on her that he used on Dixie, and it's all got to be linked somehow. All they have to do is figure out how, and they've got 36 hours to do it. Tad says he's going to Baltimore to Johns-Hopkins, and Maur-ia insists she's going with him. She points out that she used to be a doctor, and obviously the answer to all of this is medical. She says she doesn't remember being a doctor, but Tad tells her that's okay, "I barely remember being a detective!" David tells Anna he guesses he'll see her tomorrow. She says Jackson's fishing, and he shouldn't worry. David chuckles as he says he's not worried, but he wants her to go home and get some rest. Anna offers to come downstairs and talk for a while, saying she's still got some pull around here; David thanks her, but would feel better if he knew that she and the baby were home and resting.

Today's Thoughts

Quote of the Day:

Tad (to David): "I'm sorry for being curious, doc, it's just that I come from a big family of doctors, and I can't remember one of them hiding a body underneath a sandcastle!"

OBSERVATION OF THE DAY:

The way Kendall gets rid of Nikki with quick head gestures made me laugh and recall reading that Nicole Kidman just signed on to play Samantha Stevens in the big screen remake of Bewitched. Kendall's been called a witch before -- I can just see her wiggling her nose and Nikki disappearing! (That's Nikki, not Nicole, but I think Alicia Minshew would be a great Samantha!) On another note, Tad told Maur-ia he got hurt pretty badly twelve years ago; that's when he lost his memory. I'm surprised the writers were specific about it (even though it was twelve years ago), as opposed to "several years ago", because Brooke was pregnant with Jamie then, and if that boy is now eleven, they're growing them a whole lot bigger than when my son was eleven! I know, soap years!--Karen

I haven't watched it yet! I hate to watch missed episodes out of order.--Gloria

Next on All My Children:

Brooke slaps Adam and says she's not going to take anything from him!

Aidan asks Kendall what's keeping her here in Pine Valley?

Maur-ia asks Tad if he thinks David conducted his experiments on all of them?

Greenlee beams as Leo asks, "So, was it worth the wait?"

ANNOUNCER'S BONUS PREVIEW:

Trey has a surprise for Greenlee -- in Paris!
