A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING…

Jack clears his throat and says, “Don’t mind us.” Lily excitedly tells her dad that Sam’s her boyfriend again—isn’t that great? Reggie wants to have a talk with Sam, but Jack says he’ll take care of this. He suggests he and Sam have a talk, and propels the boy into the loft. Lily follows, but Reggie suggests they give Jack and Sam a chance to talk. Sam tells her it’s fine, and she hopes it won’t take long, “We still have more practicing to do.” Jack agrees, just a few minutes, and Reggie pats his dad on the back for support as he goes after his sister. Jack shuts the door, and turns to look at Sam. He starts by saying Sam knows Lily is special, the way she works to read a face to pick up cues, the way she can’t stand red, the way she needs a schedule to feel safe. His point is that he doesn’t do her any favors if he ignores her condition. It’s not a matter of being P.C. or cool; she has a legitimate disorder, and it needs to be considered. “Autism Spectrum Disorder,” Sam agrees, “We don’t just make out, we do talk.” He knows all about it; what Jack doesn’t seem to understand is that they talk about a hell of a lot more than that, “I mean, do you?” Jack thinks he would do well to remember this conversation is about him, and his daughter, and whether he’s going to permit her to see him. Sam asks what’s his other option, lock her up? Put her in a bubble and make sure she never grows up? He and Lily never do anything she doesn’t want to do. Jack nods, “That’s exactly what has me worried, Sam.”

Reggie listens at the door, and Lily asks if they’re done yet? Reggie doesn’t hear any whimpering, so he doesn’t think they’re done. Lily thinks that’s good, it means they have some time, and reminds him he wanted to give her some dating cues. Reggie just wants her to know what to watch out for with some guys, and Lily thanks him—they don’t teach that in Life Skills! Reggie says kissing is okay, if she has to, but touching… Lily says touching is hard for her, “I have to practice that a lot.” She takes notes as Reggie says no touching below the neck, her clothes are never, ever, to come off or open; no buttons, and no zippers! Lily reminds him he took off Dani’s blouse; doesn’t he remember, she took pictures of it? Did he do something wrong?

Jack tells Sam that Lily has no idea what it means to have a real boyfriend, and he doesn’t think a teenage boy should be the one to teach her.

Reggie tells Lily he’s a guy, and part of his manly duties is to be bad; it’s the girl’s job to stop that from happening. Lily asks if Dani was bad for allowing that to happen, and Reggie groans she’s killing him here! Lily reads back the list, and Reggie guesses that’s everything, “I guess you’re as ready as you’ll ever be.”

Sam asks if he isn’t going to tell him he knows where he lives, and he knows plenty of guys who would be happy to break his legs? Jack insists he would never say that, however true it might be. As Sam assures him Lily is safe with him, Lily comes back in with Reggie and tells her dad that Reggie explained everything to her, “Could we go on our date now, please?”

When Jack says he expects her home by 11 o’clock, Lily agrees, according to her schedule, they’ll be finished with dinner at BJ’s and a movie by 10:50pm, so that leaves 10 minutes to practice their kissing. Jack tells them to have a good time, within reason, and the teens leave. Reggie starts out after them, saying he’ll be his eyes and ears. Jack stops him, saying they can’t selectively mainstream; they can’t trust Lily in one area and not another. She’s earned their trust, and the right to live like any other teenage girl, even if it will give them nightmares and what he’s sure is the beginning of an ulcer. Reggie trusts Lily; it’s that Sam guy that makes her forget about her schedule. Jack insists Lily does not get off her schedule, but Reggie asks if he ever thought there was a first time for everything.

IT’S FORGIVENESS…

J.R. pulls David off Di as she exclaims, “Have you lost your mind?” He rears back to hit Hayward, but Tad smiles as he tells J.R. to wait, “You don’t want to do that, I do,” and punches David. Babe rushes to her father and tells the guys to come on, this is a shock for him, too! David tells Tad it comes right back, the pain, the memories, the love, the jealousy, “Are you two…?” Tad says no, and laughs it’s just a reflex. J.R. warns Hayward to keep his hands off his mother, or the next time he goes down, he won’t be getting back up. David sees that he buys it, too. Her face and voice are different, but those eyes and that kiss… What is this, some kind of set-up or a con? Babe tells him Tad checked fingerprints; the details and the story all fits. Di says it’s her, but please let her talk to her son right now.
