QUITE A TEAM, ONCE UPON A TIME…

J.R. stands over her coffin as he cries, “I’m sorry, Babe. Oh, please. You don’t know how sorry I am.” He moves to Dixie’s coffin, breaking down as he wonders how he’s going to say goodbye to his mom. Tad watches and tells Joe he’s worried about J.R.; he doesn’t know if he’s going to make it through this one. Joe watches Krystal go to Babe’s coffin, and says right now, he’s worried about Krystal and the baby. Krystal touches the coffin and tells Babe she’ll always be her Baby Doll, always. Colby tearfully hugs her brother, and tells him she’s so sorry. Adam pats J.R.’s shoulder and says they’ll meet him back at the house. J.R. nods, and Adam leads Krystal and Colby away. J.R. watches as Tad catches Krystal’s hand, and holds it for just a moment in comfort.

Julia tells the mourners that everyone is invited back to Wildwind to celebrate the lives of these wonderful women.

Bianca goes to J.R., who tells her, “If you still love Maggie, forgive her. She may be gone tomorrow.” He breaks down in tears again, and Bianca says she’s so sorry. She can’t even imagine. “Neither can I,” J.R. sobs, and she reaches out to touch his arm. She quietly says she understands why he didn’t speak during the services; there are no words. Zoe comes up and notes that words aren’t necessary, unless they’re used as weapons. She demands that J.R. tell Bianca why she really didn’t speak, why he didn’t pay tribute to the mother of his child. Bianca cautions this is not the time or the place… Zoe goes on, “So no one would call you a hypocrite, a loathsome husband. You put Babe in that coffin as sure as the killer did.” Bianca looks at her, stunned, and tells her that J.R. said goodbye to his mother and his wife today, so whatever it is she thinks she needs to say… Zoe ignores her and tells J.R., “You planned to toss her out and steal her son. You tormented her with blackmail to get sole custody. Admit it!” She doesn’t know all of the sordid details, only that he was threatening to ruin her mother’s life, as well. J.R. asks what she knows? She only knew Babe for five minutes! Zoe replies that she held Babe after the attack. She held her hand while she asked for her mother and her son, “She didn’t ask for you. She died hating you.”

As Palmer stands at Dixie’s coffin, Joe tells Opal and Tad that Ruth wanted to come, flu or no flu, but he wouldn’t let her. Tad knows; he talked to her this morning. Joe says if he needs anything… Opal agrees, he’s got to remember he’s never too old to need his folks. Tad hugs her and wonders if she honestly thinks he doesn’t know that? Opal asks Joe if he thinks he could take Palmer home, maybe find some excuse to give him a once-over? Joe agrees, he doesn’t even think he’ll give him a fight today. Opal thanks him, and Joe tells Tad he’ll talk to him later. He goes over to Palmer, and Opal sighs if she could just grab that old coot, hold him tight and tell him she is not going to let this take the fire from his eyes… Tad asks why she doesn’t, and Opal laughs, “And have him call the dogs on me?” She can’t fix what broke when Dixie died. You can love and love and love, but you can’t fill the empty spaces in your heart. Tad hugs her, and she cries, “You take care of your heart, too, honey.” Tad agrees, I will, Mama.”

Zach goes to Ethan’s grave, and sits silently looking at the headstone, “Ethan Andrew Cambias, Steadfast, Righteous, and True. Born: 3/22/1981, Died: 2/20/2006”. He vows, “I’m going to find the man who took the woman you loved, son. I’m going to find him and I’m going to stop him. Tell Simone I won’t let it go, okay? Tell her I’m sorry.”

Zoe tells J.R. he never deserved a chance to be Babe’s destiny, and he can live with that, “That’s your reward.” Bianca calls that enough—stop! Today is about Dixie and Babe, not about what J.R. did or didn’t do to Babe, or what anybody thinks of him. She steps closer and tells J.R. she’s sorry for his loss. He thanks her for her sympathies and starts out. Tad catches his arm, but J.R. angrily shakes him off. Taken aback, Tad asks what he’s doing? Where is he going? J.R. snaps that he’s not going to the bar—isn’t that all that matters? Tad watches worriedly as he leaves.

Zoe goes to Bianca and asks if she can join her? Bianca says of course, and Zoe sits beside her. She apologizes for what she said to J.R.; it wasn’t the time. She sees a photo Bianca is looking at, and asks what’s this? Bianca shows her the picture taken with Babe, Miranda and Little Adam, and calls it happier times, before everything went to hell. Zoe comments on the joy on their faces—they absolutely glow! When Bianca says she and Babe were quite a team once upon a time, Zoe agrees she can see it. Her eyes were dancing. Bianca tells her that’s what it was like to be with Babe, and then everything changed. Zoe comments that she kept the picture of her friend. Babe says she was moving to Paris, and needed new… Well, everything. Zoe chuckles that she can understand that sentiment. Bianca smiles at that, and says Babe gave this to her. She didn’t want to take it, but she just couldn’t help herself. Zoe says we all need pieces of our past to hold on to. Bianca stands and says Babe should have this back. Zoe asks what she’s doing? Bianca moves toward the coffin and insists Babe would have wanted this. Zoe says Babe knows she loves her, “You don’t have to do this.” Babe cries she can’t let her go without… Wanting to put a photo in the coffin must seem pretty silly. Zoe says no, the ancient Egyptians put many objects of value in with their loved ones to send them to the next life, a greater life with better jewelry. Bianca sighs it’s just her body. Zoe tells her when life is unbearable most days, the alternative doesn’t seem so bad. When Simone passed, that’s exactly where she was, aching to let her spirit go, jealous of their freedom. She tells Bianca that her forgiveness will give Babe peace. Bianca hopes so.
